If you've arrived on this page you're a little curious as to how The Dundee Channel came about so some of the answers have been placed here.
The Dundee Channel is the trading name
of a domain name www.dundeechannel.com
It is an independent entity not linked to any
other organisation or entity in Dundee. It will
talk to anyone and everyone and inclusion
is not based on any predefined criteria.
It was founded by Dundonian Scott Somerville.
Scott was trained in audio visual and computer
studies. In the infancy of online video Scott watched video file sharing and while running a video production company began to create unique content in the event the internet began to run at faster speeds.
Before You Tube Scott began recording the citizens of Dundee not just for an afternoon but for 5 years from 1999 to 2003 because he recognised the world hadn't realised the recording potential of then cheap VHS tape and it's ability to record huge amounts of material if you took the time to talk to people.
The series was called Time Capsule and sold hundreds of VHS cassettes in shops in Dundee, Tayside, Fife and Angus running to 30 episodes.
In 2007 Scott visited Cannes where he heard from
representatives of United Artists and NBC that
despite the challenges the new internet age was
bringing if he had the content the audience would
come.
The Dundee Channel came into being on 1st September 2009. To date The Dundee Channel has been hit over 12 million times and is watched from over 68 countries.
The Channel is proud of its audience and that you can put faces to the Channels site in a largely faceless website hosting community.
Scott puts some of The Channels success down
to its independence and its television style ratings system which basically means only the top ten programme strands ever remain in production even though there is data on over 250 strands every day.
